Glossary of drinks (part 1)

• AMARETTO
A bittersweet almond-flavoured liqueur produced originally in sicily.

• AMARULA
A south African cream liqueur flavoured with the berries of the marula tree, cream-coloured and nuty-flavoured.

• AKVAVIT (AQUAVIT)
A clear Danish (Scandinavian) spirit distilled from grain or potatoes and flavoured caraway seeds. High alcohol…popular in Nordic lands.

• ANGOSTURA BITTERS
Rum-based bitters from Trinidad. Dark pink in colour and used a few drops at a time to add piquancy to a drink that might otherwise be considered too sweet.

• AMER PICON
French aperitif bitters, flavoured with orange and gentian.

• ANISETTE
French liqueur, flavoured with anise, coriander and other herbs.

• APPLEJACK
North American name for apple brandy.

• ARMAGNAC
French brandy produced in Gascony, it is rarely used for cocktail.

• APERITIF
A drink before the meal to encourage the appetite, which could be a commercial product or a mix cocktail.
